My house is from the 1920s and the closet walls are plaster over lath. Can you even anchor a system to that?

Yes. Plaster over lath is the most common condition our custom closets go into in Andover’s older neighborhoods. We locate the studs at the measure visit and anchor the vertical panels into framing wherever we can reach it. Where the layout puts a panel in the middle of a stud bay, we run a horizontal cleat across two studs and hang the panel off that. Nothing structural gets carried by plaster alone. If the lath is loose or the plaster is failing behind the closet, we will tell you at the measure rather than discovering it with a drill.

The original closets in my Shawsheen Village house are tiny. Can you make one bigger, or am I stuck with the footprint?

We work within the existing opening, because moving a closet wall is framing and drywall work rather than closet work. Within that footprint there is usually more room than it looks. Double-hanging one side and taking shelving to the ceiling can add a substantial amount of hanging space to a small original closet. If the space genuinely cannot hold what you need, we will say so and talk about a wardrobe or an under-eave build instead.

My second-floor bedroom has a knee wall and a dormer. Is that space usable for a closet?

Usually yes. Custom closets under a slope are often the best storage in the house, because nothing else can use that space. Under a knee wall we build drawer banks or pull-out units on casters, since the depth is there even though the height is not. In a dormer alcove we hang a short rod at full height and shelve the sloped portion. The one thing to check first is whether that space is unconditioned and shares air with the attic, because seasonal clothing stored against an uninsulated roof deck will pick up humidity.

There is a radiator under the only long wall in my closet. What can you do with that?

We build around it and keep clearance. Cabinetry does not go tight to a heat source, so the panel next to a radiator gets set off it. We usually put open shelving above rather than a closed box, so the heat is not trapped. Hanging garments directly over a radiator is worth avoiding regardless, so that wall generally becomes shelves and the rod moves to the return wall. Drawers cost several times what an equivalent run of shelving costs, so a closet with two banks of drawers can price above a larger closet without them.
