A closet drawer with a lock is a deterrent rather than security, so ask what locking options exist and where a safe could be anchored. A small safe that is not bolted down is portable.

Dry cleaning comes back in plastic and then lives on the rod for months. Is that a problem?

For the clothes, yes. Plastic traps solvent vapor and moisture against fabric, and over months that shows up as yellowing on anything pale. Take the bag off when the garment comes in the door. The design fix is to make that easy. Keep a short run of empty rod near the closet door as the landing spot for anything just returned, and put a bin or a hook underneath for the bags. Where a closet has no slack anywhere on the rod, cleaning stays bagged, because there is nowhere to put it while you deal with it.

Our rod sits low and long dresses drag on the floor. Can it just be raised?

Sometimes, and what sits above it decides. A rod usually hangs off the shelf over it, so raising one means raising both, and a shelf can only climb until it reaches the top of the door casing. Where a shelf cannot move, keep it and take that bay’s rod off a bracket fixed higher on the side panels instead. Going the other way is often better anyway. Leave the rod where it is and give long garments a purpose-built bay with clear drop, putting shelving above it rather than a rod under it.

Which closet accessories are worth paying for, and which are not?

Worth it: adjustable dividers that stop bags and boots slumping, and a shallow lined drawer for small items. Also a valet rod if you genuinely lay out clothes the night before, and a mirror inside a bay you can see into. Rarely worth it: fixed tie and belt racks, which claim a permanent footprint for a shrinking category, and specialized inserts molded around one object. Every accessory takes width from your bays, so the test is whether it earns that width every week. Adjustable beats fitted almost every time, because a wardrobe changes and drilled uprights let custom closets change with it.
