A small garage is an arithmetic problem before it is a storage problem. Your car takes a fixed amount of floor. Your garage door takes a fixed amount of ceiling. Whatever survives both is the only place garage cabinets can go.
Most small-garage advice skips that part and goes straight to product photos, which is how people end up with a beautiful cabinet run they have to turn sideways to walk past. Get the tape measure out first. What follows is the set of numbers that decide the layout, and then the garage cabinets that actually fit inside them.
The Four Measurements That Decide Everything
Take these four numbers before you shop for garage cabinets.
Wall length, floor to ceiling, in each bay. Not the outside dimension of the garage. The clear wall you can actually build against, minus the door casing, the electrical panel, the hose bib and the window.
Your vehicle, mirror to mirror and bumper to bumper. Measure the one you actually park inside, not the average car. A midsize sedan and a crew-cab pickup are roughly two feet apart in width, and that gap decides whether your side walls are available at all.
How far the driver’s door swings. Sit in the car where you park it and open the door as far as you need to get out. Measure from the body of the car to the edge of the door. That number sets how deep your side-wall garage cabinets can be, rather than a catalog depth.
Ceiling height, and the height of the garage door when it is open. These are two different numbers. The door parks below the ceiling on its tracks. The space above and behind it is either the best storage in the room or completely unusable, depending on the track type.
Write all four on your phone. A designer who has those numbers can tell you in one conversation whether the garage cabinets you have in mind will fit.
Sort Everything Into Three Piles
Once you know what space you have, decide what earns it. Three piles, and the sorting matters more than any cabinet catalog does. Garage cabinets are the last decision here, not the first.
Weekly. The recycling bin, the leaf blower, the bike you actually ride, the socket set, the dog leash. This pile goes at eye and hand height on the most accessible wall. If you have to move something to reach it, it is in the wrong pile.
Seasonal. Snow shovels and a roof box in July. Beach chairs and a cooler in January. Half of this pile is dead weight at any given moment, which makes it the right candidate for overhead racks or the top shelf of a tall cabinet.
Neither. The paint cans from the last owner, the box of cables, the exercise equipment. Every small garage has this pile, and it is usually sitting on prime wall. Deal with it before you buy storage, because paying for a custom cabinet system to hold things you will never use again is the most expensive mistake available here.
Do the sort before the design appointment. It changes the drawing more than anything else you can do.
Where Storage Actually Goes in a Small Garage
Garage cabinets go in four zones, roughly in the order you should use them up.
The back wall. Usually the longest uninterrupted run, usually the easiest to work with, and usually the wall people fill with junk first. If the car is short enough to leave clearance in front of the bumper, this is where a full run of garage cabinets and a counter belongs. Measure the gap between the front bumper and the wall with the car parked normally before you commit.
The side walls, at shallow depth. The door-swing number pays for itself here. Deep garage cabinets on a tight side wall are what make people squeeze past their own car for ten years. A shallower cabinet on the same wall holds most of the same things and lets the door open.
Above the hood, and above the garage door. Wall space above a parked hood goes unused in almost every garage, and so does the header above the door opening. Both take a shallow shelf or a wall cabinet without costing an inch of floor.
The ceiling. Overhead storage racks hang from the joists and take the seasonal pile. Two things govern them: how high the garage door sits when open, and whether the racks stay clear of that path. Anything that fouls the door is not an option, however much space it appears to save.
Order matters. Fill the back wall, then go shallow on the side walls, then go up. Garages designed the other way around end up with plenty of overhead racks and a floor that is still covered. There is more on planning the room as a whole in our guide to garage design.
The Features That Earn Their Space
Most add-ons to garage cabinets are a net loss in a small garage. These three are not.
Adjustable shelves. A garage changes contents every few years, and fixed shelves lock you into whatever you owned the month the cabinets went in. Adjustable shelving is the feature most worth its cost here.
A work surface that does not eat floor. A fixed workbench takes floor you need for the car. Ask about a bench that folds against the wall, or a cart that parks under a counter, so you get the work surface without giving up the parking spot.
Lighting where you store things. A single ceiling bulb throws the inside of every cabinet into shadow. LED strips under a wall cabinet, or inside a tall one, change what you can find. In a narrow garage they also change how big it feels, so ask where the light goes when the garage cabinets are drawn.
Think hard before you buy deep drawers you will fill with things you never take out, or specialty racks sized for equipment you might replace. Both eat volume that a small garage cannot spare.
Finishes, and What Survives a Garage
A garage is a harder environment than any room inside the house. It swings from below freezing in February to humid in August, it gets road salt tracked in all winter, and things get dropped in it.
Thermally fused laminate holds up in that environment. The surface is bonded into the panel under heat and pressure rather than glued on top, so it does not lift at the edges when humidity moves. It cleans with a damp cloth and needs no sealing or refinishing. Exposed edges are banded, so the panel is closed where you touch it. That is what our garage cabinets are built from.
On color, lighter finishes make a narrow garage read wider, and they bounce what light you have, which matters more here than it would in a big garage. Darker finishes hide marks better. Installation Day in a Garage You Still Have to Park In
Two things are worth knowing before install day.
The garage has to be clear enough to work in. Garage cabinets are assembled and fastened on site, and the crew needs that wall plus a few feet in front of it. Cars come out for the day. If the driveway is short or the parking is shared, sort that out when you book rather than on the morning.
Fastening is what matters. Garage cabinets on a wall carry real weight, so they get anchored into framing and never into drywall alone. That is the main argument against a DIY install. Assembly is the easy half. Anchoring is where garage cabinets fail, and a cabinet that pulls off a wall does more damage on the way down here than it would anywhere else in the house.
Mention how the walls are finished when you book. Exposed studs, drywall, and a finished painted wall each get handled a little differently.
What Drives the Price
Four things move the price of garage cabinets, in roughly this order.
Linear feet. How much wall you are covering drives the price more than anything else. A back wall run costs more than a corner.
Drawers versus shelves. Drawers cost more because there is hardware in every one. A cabinet full of shelves and a cabinet full of drawers are not close in price.
Depth and height. Taller and deeper units use more material. In a small garage you are going shallower anyway, which works in your favor.
Accessories and lighting. Individually small, collectively not.
There are two ways to keep a small-garage project in budget without cutting quality. Build the back wall properly now and leave the side walls for later, and put the money into cabinet boxes rather than specialty inserts. A well-built shallow run you add to in two years beats a full perimeter of something that will not last.
You get a firm number for the garage cabinets after the in-home appointment. Any price quoted before somebody measures the garage is a guess.
If You Only Do One Thing
Measure those four numbers before you talk to anyone, including us. A small garage rewards a plan drawn around real dimensions and punishes one drawn around a catalog. Most small garages we work in have more usable wall than the owner thought, and it is almost always above the hood and above the door.

Small Garage Cabinet Questions, Answered
Our garage is twenty feet wide and we park two cars in it. Is there any wall left at all?
Usually not on the side walls, and that is fine. Two vehicles in a twenty-foot bay leave almost nothing between the mirrors and the walls once you account for opening the doors. What survives is the back wall in front of both bumpers, the wall above both hoods, the door header and the ceiling. That combination holds more than most people expect. Park both cars the way you normally do, then measure what is genuinely left before assuming the answer is nothing.
Can garage cabinets go on the wall where the door tracks run?
Partly, and the track type decides it. Standard lift tracks curve up and run back along the ceiling, so the top section of that wall is taken. The run below the horizontal track is often usable at shallow depth. High-lift and vertical-lift tracks change the answer completely. Take a photo of the track with the door closed and again with it open, and bring both to the design appointment. It is a two-second photo that saves a redesign.
How deep can garage cabinets be before I cannot open the car door?
The car sets that number, not any cabinet spec. Park where you normally park, open the driver’s door as far as you need to get out, and measure from the wall to the edge of the door. What is left is your maximum depth. Take a couple of inches off it so you are not scraping paint every time. In most tight garages this pushes the side walls to a shallow cabinet and puts the deep units on the back wall.
Our ceiling is low and the open garage door hangs down into it. Do overhead racks still work?
Sometimes. One measurement decides it, and it is how low the underside of the open door sits rather than how high the ceiling is. Anything hanging below that line has to stay outside the door’s path, which usually pushes racks to the back of the garage instead of over the parking spot. In a genuinely low garage, the wall above the hood and above the door header often returns more storage than the ceiling does. Measure with the door open before ruling either in or out.
Our garage floor slopes toward the door. Do base cabinets sit crooked?
No, they get shimmed and leveled during installation. Nearly every garage floor slopes toward the door on purpose so that water drains out, so this is normal and the crew expects it. The cabinets end up level. The small gap that opens at the low end gets covered by trim or a toe kick. Tell us if the slope is severe, or if the floor is cracked or heaved, because that changes how the base gets set.
Where do the trash barrels, the bikes and the snowblower go?
Those three break more small-garage plans than anything else, and they need naming at the design appointment rather than on install day. Barrels want an open bay at floor level with nothing above them at head height, because they get dragged in and out. Bikes go on the wall or the ceiling and need clearance for the handlebars, which is wider than the bike looks. A snowblower needs floor, and it needs to come straight out the door without a turn. Design garage cabinets around those three first, then fit the rest into what is left.
